 A contemporary fashion trend has grown as celebrities began to wear LED clothing. Lighting has long been employed in shows, but it is just now making its way from the stage to the costume.

Ariana Grande performed at the Country Music Awards on Wednesday night in an LED matching top and skirt. She performed alongside the band Little Big Town, and despite having their drums lighted up and their clothes with neon trim, Ariana Grande in her LED dress was no match. As she sang 'Bang Bang' during the awards, the lights on her garment changed colours.


Ariana Grande is not the first celebrity to get noticed for her light-up costumes. Topshop collaborated with Ashish earlier this year to develop a line of LED accessories like backpacks and platform sneakers. Lily Allen was spotted wearing the Topshop collaboration's LED stripped PVC bag. Nicole Scherzinger, an X Factor judge, drew notice when she donned a 'Twitter' outfit with live tweets projected in LED lights. Other celebs sporting LED accessories include Katy Perry and Ellie Goulding.

Puma, a sportswear manufacturer, also created a line for men and women that included LED lights in running apparel to keep people safe at night.

 

LED gowns have even graced the runways of designers such as Richard Nicolls, Hussein Chalayars, and Diana Eng.

 

The Galaxy dress, the world's most renowned LED dress, is also on display at the Chicago Museum of Science and Industry as part of the Fast Forward: Inventing the Future show. The silk gown was embellished with 4,000 Swarovski crystals and 24,000 LED lights.

LED lights are popular due to their brightness, long life term, and lack of heat generation as compared to conventional lights. This means they can work with clothing and accessories in ways that previous lights cannot.

 

LED light bulbs have been used in the manufacture of beds and furnishings, in addition to clothing.
